The  ATEX directive  (94/9 / CE) obliges manufacturers to have their electrical and/or mechanical products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres certified.  Products should be classified according to their level of protection against the risk of becoming a potential source of ignition in explosive atmospheres. 

Therefore, ATEX certified walkie talkies are designed and manufactured to prevent ignition of the explosive atmosphere around them and the certification authorizes them to use these radiotelephones in potentially explosive areas.
